Amazon Studios is now developing a live-action series set in the Blade Runner universe.

Back in November, Blade Runner director Ridley Scott told BBC (via Variety) that both the pilot and the series bible for a live-action spinoff show were already written and at the ready. Now, Scott is set to executive produce the series – entitled Blade Runner 2099 – which will be a direct continuation of Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 film, Blade Runner 2049.

According to Deadline, “the project is in priority development at Amazon Studios, which is fast-tracking and eyeing potential production dates. Staffing is currently underway for writers to join a room.” Deadline also added that its sources said Scott may direct the series, if and when it does move forward.

At this time, very little is known about the series, other than the “2099” of the title, which indicates that it will time-hop 50 years into the future. (The most recent installment of the medium-spanning Blade Runner saga – the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus – aired on Adult Swim and was set in the year 2032.)

Silka Luisa, showrunner of Apple TV+’s Shining Girls, will write and executive produce, with Ridley Scott set to executive produce via Scott Free Productions.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcon Entertainment are also attached to executive produce, alongside David W. Zucker of Scott Free, Blade Runner 2049 screenwriter Michael Green, Ben Roberts, Cynthia Yorkin, and Clayton Krueger. Alcon Entertainment and Amazon Studios will produce, along with Scott Free.
