What is Zbrush?

ZBrush is an art tool created by artists, for artists. ZBrush set the industry standard for 3D digital sculpting and painting since its debut at SIGGRAPH in 1999. Its features enable artists to create 3D models using customizable brushes to shape, texture and paint virtual clay in a real-time environment with instant feedback. ZBrush has transformed countless careers and the industry itself. When professional 3D artists need to do heavy sculpting, ZBrush is the tool of choice.

ZBrush Free Upgrades Policy News

Following the acquisition news, the ZBrush team updated its subscription policy. According to their website, perpetual licenses acquired after December 29, 2021, will not receive ZBrush Free Upgrades.

Many of us who have had ZBrush for a long time predicted this. If you bought ZBrush back when it was significantly cheaper, the free updates were a huge bonus. Especially when you consider how much other comparable companies would have charged, you feel the actual change. However, as the creative software industry changes, this amazing and generous bonus of owning a ZBrush will change with Maxon’s ZBrush.

Previously, all the updates used to always be free. The team always noted that licenses are entitled to one year of free upgrades. Now you need a subscription to get upgrades.

“Perpetual licenses never expire.  You pay a one-time cost for your license and own it from that point forward.  Purchases of perpetual licenses after December 29, 2021, can only receive critical bug fix updates.  Feature upgrades would require the purchase of an upgrade license (pricing and frequency yet to be determined),” says the new license FAQ page

There’s also a new upgrade page noting that subscription licenses automatically receive free upgrades. Customers, who purchased a perpetual license after December 29, 2021, will now only get bug fixes.

“ZBrush perpetual customers who purchased prior to December 29, 2021, are entitled to free updates for one year following their purchase.” Customers who purchased a perpetual license after December 29, 2021 will not receive free upgrades.

ZBrush joins Maxon

Previously, Pixologic announced that ZBrush will be joining Maxon and their software ecosystem.

“The ZBrush will continue to bring you the most cutting-edge innovations in digital sculpting. This commitment to excellence has been our philosophy since the inception of ZBrush twenty-four years ago. With the addition of the talented Maxon team and our combined know-how, the future for existing and new ZBrush users looks brighter than ever,” wrote the team.
